How Our Family Line of Goldfoot Wound up in Lithuania

 Nadene Goldfoot

Me:   Neanderthal 2.9%  found by 23&Me  After Neanderthal are the Cro Magnons- or homo sapiens.   Our DNA goes back 29,000 to 34,000 years.  Neanderthals lived " during the middle to late Pleistocene Epoch, about 400 000 to 40 000 years ago. Neanderthals lived in Eurasia with traces discovered as far north as present-day Belgium and south to the Mediterranean and southwest Asia. At 40,000 Neanderthals died out and at 29,000 to 34,000 to Cro Magnons lived.   This is why my paternal line only have 2.9%;   became a Cro-magnon with a little Neanderthal DNA.

                          Cro Magnons:  early Europeans
A line of Native Americans with Q haplogroup
Native Americans first arrived on the continent 12,000 years ago.
Russians...yes, we were from Lithuania--Russia held many times
Possible ancestor looked like this handsome guy

Grandfather Nathan Abraham Goldfoot (August 5,1871-July 19, 1912)

Abraham was not a name we were privy to know about until genealogy research took place.  He had named his 3rd son, Abraham, who had died in infancy, though.  The Jewish custom of naming is for family who have died.  Rabbi Goldberg told me to look and see if we had an Abraham in the family.

Rabbi Goldberg on left-the other, also a rabbi, was killed, too.
He was connected to us and my helper from Jerusalem.  He was slaughtered in his synagogue during morning prayers later on, a horrible shock to me.  I hadn't even known--he hadn't told me---that he was a well-known rabbi.

Our Nathan grew a beard because my father remembered sitting on his lap and playing with it.  Zayda (grandfather) died from an accident when Dad was 4 years old, so he really did remember.

Our family line started with one man quite possibly born in Turkey of Central Asia who migrated to Mesopotamia who migrated to ancient Canaan some 4,000 years ago.  A descendant of his then remained on the land till 70 CE-about 2,,000 years ago only to be transferred to Rome, Italy, possibly as merchants originally or slaves after 70 CE.    From there the family finally wound up in Germany in around the year 1,000 CE, and then found they needed to leave and headed northwards, ending in Lithuania in the year 1321-1398, still part of the Dark Ages.  We had become part of the Ashkenazic Jews.

We know these facts through genealogy with the modern help of places like ancestry.com;  and our own DNA testing, especially the Big Y test from Family Tree DNA (FTDNA), that shows our one and only male Goldfoot's Y haplogroup to be a rare QBZ67.  Q's are from places like Turkey.  My brother's test was Q-M242 , then Q-Y2200 which  is the predominant Y-DNA haplogroup among Native Americans and several peoples of Central Asia and Northern Siberia. Adele Canada is the project person at FTDNA for our line.  Wikipedia said, "Q-M378's subbranch Q-L245's subclades Q-Y2200 and Q-YP1035 are the only varieties of haplogroup Q that are found in Ashkenazi Jews. Citizen scientists found that some Sephardic Jews carry different subclades of Q-L245, including Q-BZ3900, Q-YP745, and Q-YP1237.."

So, a very long time ago, our line split off from the Native American line to become a line of Jews that must have hooked up in Mesopotamia. As far as Jews go, who are a very small group today as it is after the Holocaust killed 6 million of us being only 0.02% of the total world population, This line is one of the small ones of Jews.

It is a part of the Halpern group, though. The Halpern group is a group on FTDNA of men related to the Halperns whose ancestors were many well-known rabbis of the day in Europe. The genealogy of many go back to King David of Israel (1010-970 BCE). Family lines of Wertheimer and Oppenheim/er are among those we connect with.

The nice thing for genealogists is that in order to sit on the high court, the Sanhedrin,  the 71 ordained scholars; rabbis who had to present their genealogy scrolls showing their connection to Rabbi Hillel of the 1st century CE  or King David so there have been a few that were able to  still exist today.

Interesting to me is that they didn't realize the power of DNA, expecting descendants of rabbis to produce rabbis who would be equally brilliant in their judgements.  For in the days of Hillel, rabbis held debates between each other on point of law
of Moses.  They even had debating partners and practiced debating. My son took debate in high school and went to state (Salem, Oregon) winning almost all their debates.    Hillel had 2 famous teachers, Shemaiah and Avtalyon which is like saying Harvard AND Yale.  Hillel even became president of the Sanhedrin.  Hillel and his debating partner, who was known to take Hillel's opposing side, was Shammai.  They were the last  of the pairs (Zugot) of scholars.  Hillel was well-known for his humility and tendency to leniency.  Usually Hillel was the one other rabbis followed.

From Lithuania and before WWI, our grandfather, Nathan Abraham Goldfus, immigrated to England and changed his name from Goldfus to Goldfoot, and then from there to Dublin, Ireland seeking a new homeland lived for a short while with cousins who turned out to be the ancestors of Ian Goldfoot who I met a few years ago in Texas.  From Ireland, somehow Nathan moved on to the USA while his cousins immigrated to South Africa, a favored place for Lithuanian Jews since I found many  of our relatives there.

Nathan met and married another Lithuanian, Zlata Jermulowske,  in Idaho where they married in Boise.  They lived in a little mining town there of Council, Idaho for a short while.  After my uncle Charley was born, they rode the train to Portland, Oregon.

Stanley with 1st wife Rebecca Finger and daughters in Israel , I met him in 1981 in the King David Hotel and at his home in Jerusalem.  He was still as tall and slim as he was in this earlier picture.

When I made aliyah in 1980, the first thing I did was to look up Stanley Goldfoot (1914-2006) .  He was a pioneer, moving to Israel before 1948 and becoming the Chief of Intelligence for the Stern Group whose leader was the famous Avraham Stern who went by Yair, (1907-1942).  In 1939-1940 he left the Irgun Tzeval Leumi, of which he had been a leader, because of its refusal to continue anti-British activities in Palestine during World War II.  He formed an underground organization later known as Lahame Herut Israel.  The British called it the Stern Gang which carried out acts of sabotage, etc.  They did attack the King David Hotel, as it happens--where I met Stanley much later on.  Stern was killed by the British police while being arrested...one of those affairs we have seen happen to Blacks in the states during arrests.  Wouldn't you know it, but Stanley had 2 daughters, no sons.

Ian on the right.  He was my age (1934-2022).  He also had daughters, no sons.  He had had a scholarship in track in Texas when younger.  He also ran in Israel in the Maccabi Games running the 100 meter race.  Ian Goldfoot and Stanley Goldfoot were 2nd cousins.

My son was a runner in high school.  Ian would be so excited!

His son, my only grandson, is a marathon runner.  DNA for running!

Finally, I traveled from Oregon to Texas and visited my brother and met Ian at David's home since he had finally immigrated from South Africa to Texas.  We had been phoning and messaging each other before that, discovering each other.  David's wife was Texas-born, reason for David to live there and not our lovely Oregon.

There are now Q's found in Sephardic jews. This is what we know about Jewish Q branches so far. Note that when we specify a group within the Jewish Diaspora we are only reporting where the branch is most common today.

Q-Y2232  Sephardic  and our Q-Y2200-- QBZ67 Ashkenazic

This branch is primarily found in the modern Ashkenazi Jewish population. For those with Ashkenazi Jewish oral traditions, our definitive SNP appears to Q-Y2232. Other Jewish Diaspora Q branches seem to come from elsewhere on the Q tree. They likely came into the Jewish population separately from Q-Y2232. Immediately above Q-Y2232 is Q-Y2200. It is unclear right now how and when those who are Q-Y2200 but not Q-Y2232 are related to their Ashkenazi Jewish cousins. According to the info below, ours is from 1,800 to 3,200 years old.

Behar and others published a scientific paper January 2004 found 5.22% of Ashkenazi Jewish men to have the P36 marker (a SNP downstream from M242 and upstream from M378) whereas among the non-Jewish neighbors there was only 0.3% had this SNP. It now appears that many of us also have another SNP downstream from M378, the L245. As the results from additional testing become known we will share that information.

  • M242 29,000 to 34,000 years old; Eurasia and the Americas
    • L275 26,000 to 31,000 years old; Eurasia
      • F1213 12,000 to 16,000 years old; Eurasia
        • M378 8,000 to 12,000 years old; Eurasia
          • L245 5,100 to 6,700 years old; Eurasia
            • Y2998 3,200 to 4,100 years old
              • Y2209 2,900 to 4,000 years old; Eurasia
                • Y2211 2,900 to 4,000 years old; Eurasia
                  • Y2200 1,800 to 3,200 years old; Ashkenazi Jews and some Europeans
                    • Y2232 Ashkenazi Jews (4% - 6% of the Ashkenazi population today.)

How Oster Is An Important Line On Our Goldfoot Tree

Nadene Goldfoot
Left) my father, Maurice Goldfoot, in 1943 on right, Werner Oster
in middle is Uncle Kenny Robinson
my cousins from maternal and paternal side
Werner's 1st daughter, Harriet is standing in front,
and he's holding his 2nd.

A recent familyfinder on an Oster cousin showed that her parents had been distantly related.  This happens a lot in Ashkenazi Jewish families.  Science has discovered this has boosted IQ. We're an endogamous people.

My paternal aunt, Anne Goldfoot, had married Werner Oster on September 1, 1939 at Neveh Zedek Synagogue in Portland, Oregon where we all lived.  Werner was a German Jewish refugee sponsored by my great uncle Max "Himmel" I Turshinsky Turn of LaGrande, Oregon.  He was given Werner to sponsor whose background was that he came from a family of sausage-makers in Germany, so Max thought of my father who was just starting up his own butcher shop which later turned into a wholesale meat packing business.  My dad, Maurice Goldfoot, hired him, a young  and extremely strong(Arnold Schwarzenegger type) 23 year old fellow, and as good looking as can be!  This worked out so well, as Dad had a single sister, Anne, who was 26 going on 27.  They hit it off and the marriage produced 5 daughters.

Back then, immigrants coming in to the USA had to have sponsors; at least the Jewish one did.  At a time when WWII was about to be declared, a war which had already started in Europe, this was hindering Jewish immigration that had continued in the early 20s.  Besides that, Jews as you see, had the problem of even getting out of the country they were escaping due to anti-Semitism.

Werner was lucky.  The ship, the St Louis which left in June 1939, was turned back by the USA as they didn't have permission to land in Florida. 1/3 of 937 Jews died.

Werner's family might have entered the Rhineland of Germany in the 300s CE.  Cologne was a major Jewish center then.  Emperor Constantine introduced laws pertaining to Jews then in 321 CE.  They came in from Jerusalem when the City and Temple were burned down by the Romans in 70CE.  Jewish soldiers may have been in Roman garrisons, from evidence found.  The German Carolingian royal house in the 8th-9th centuries had a pro-Jewish policy and encouraged the settlement of Jews with the purpose of devoloping trade.  By the 9th century, Jews settled in Metz, and in the 10th century in Worms, a very important center as well as in Mainz, and in Magdeburk Ratisbon, etc.

In 1096 the Crusaders massacred the Jews throughout the Rhineland and the adjacent areas.  Jews were attacked in Germany from then on.  "Some of the larger cities in the Rhineland are Aachen, Bonn, Cologne, Duisburg, Düsseldorf, Essen, Koblenz, Krefeld, Leverkusen, Mainz, Mönchengladbach, Mülheim an der Ruhr, Oberhausen, Remscheid, Solingen, Trier and Wuppertal.

By the 20th century we find Werner came from Westerburg, Hildesheim, Niedersachsen, Germany. (brown area north).  He had already had a taste of Auschwitz prison in late 1938 or early 1939 as he was picked up by the Gestapo for walking a cow along the cow path and tapping it with a stick to guide it.  They called it "hitting the cow."  He was hit a lot in Auschwitz, and forced to do things he wouldn't talk about, but I had a feeling it was something like eating raw pork.  His parents sold things and then had enough to give to one person to get out of Germany as the fare was extremely expensive, and there may have been taxes involved as well.  They chose Werner because they all thought he could get out and work and get enough money to bring them all out.  Little did they know he might become the last Jews to get out of all of Germany as the door was already closing.  Werner had a terrible time dealing with all this as he got older.

Hitler marched into Prague, Czechoslovakia on March 15, 1939 and Werner may have been the last Jew to get out of Germany as he took the ship,George Washington from Boppard to Hamburg on May 4, heading for New York.   They landed May 12, 1939.   Werner wound up going from New York to Texas.

His Passport was issued from Stuttgart. (Gold in south - Wurttemberg)

Werner's father was Ferdinand Oster b: 1881 in  Oberfell, Offenbback an Glan, Hesse, Germany.  His mother was Rosa Ullmann b: 1891 in Westerburg, Germany.   They died in the Holocaust, at Krasniczyn Concentration Poland Camp Holocaust KZ, not being able to leave sooner.

Werner's grandparents and great grandparents were:

. Arnold Oster b: June 08, 1851 in Oberfell, Offenbback an Glan, Hesse, Germany d: February 06, 1941 in Koblenz, Germany

..... +Sibilla Roos b: 1851 in Oberfell, Offenbback an Glan, Hesse, Germany d: March 25, 1930 in Koblenz, Germany m: 1878

2   Salomon OSTER b: Abt. 1830 in Germany d: in Germany
.. +Sibylla Wolff b: Abt. 1830 in Germany d: in Germany m: Abt. 1850

I notice that right hand bottom corner(yellow) is OSTERREICH is Austria on map above it.  Could they have come from there originally?

The German name of AustriaÖsterreich, derives from the Old High German word Ostarrîchi "eastern realm", recorded in the so-called Ostarrîchi Document of 996, applied to the Margraviate of Austria, a march, or borderland, of the Duchy of Bavaria created in 976.

Another remoter possibility is that the name comes from the Ostrogoths, who had a kingdom in what is now Austria and northern Italy.

My Chromosome Bearing Sephardic Jewish Ancestry

Nadene Goldfoot

We have 23 chromosomes.  Scientists have numbered them.  The #4 chromosome bears  the Sephardic origin segment I match with  another female..  I match this person on #1, too. Our common ancestor lived at least 6 generations ago which would take us to about the year of 1868 when my ggrandparents were in  Lithuania.  The other match has recent ancestors that were Ashkenazic Jews like mine, and were in Poland and Belarus, which were part of the Pale of Settlement.  My Ashkenazic ancestors as far as I had discovered were from Poland and Lithuania, also in the Pale.

Jews were in Spain since 70 CE at the time of Rome's destruction of our 2nd Temple in Jerusalem.  By 1492 the Spanish Inquisition was in full swing and Jews had to leave the country or convert.  Some went underground, hiding their religion from others.  Some went to Portugal where a few years later they too had to leave or convert.

To discover that a segment matches someone's Sephardic segment is a new twist to my DNA education.  To me, this is amazing ability to pinpoint the origins.  Triangulation was used to do so.

We  received this Sephardic ancestry segment from Sephardim of Spain or Portugal who have entered into Hispanic communities such as Columbia.

Since I was a little girl, I took dancing lessons.  At 4 or 5 I danced a Spanish dance on Battleship Oregon.  When I was about 13 I began Spanish dancing lessons from Theresa Stopper in Portland, which included the costuming, high heels and the castanets we clicked away with that were tied to our fingers. That kept up until I graduated high school.  Above is more of a Spanish gypsy dance we did.   I love both Spanish music and Russian music!  It's full of feeling!  Maybe it's because I have that teeny bit of a segment from my Sephardic ancestor.

Here, #4 chromosome is NOT A MATCH.  Neither is #1.  However, they have matches worthy of a cousin relationship that are 5cMs or bigger.  I'll take the 4.9cm segment, too.

Since 2014, I've known that: "One of the latest bits of news about our Goldfus/Goldfoot autosomal DNA test is that it shows a connection to Italy and to the Kalonymus family who were a very famous Italian family who originated from Lucca, Italy and who established themselves in Mainz, Germany. "  Could this Sephardic connection be the Kalonymus Italian line?

4/4/18 I've just found out I match another Sepharic lady informed again by researcher and author, Kevin Allen Brook; Castillo from an ancestry (A) test matching on chromosome #16 with 7.8cMs.  My son matched on #16 with 8.0cMs and my daughter matched on #16 with 7.8cMs AND #6 with 4.3cMs #16 was the same segment. Then I checked other members of my family.  My brother matched #16 with 7.7cMs. A cousin Anthony matched on #16 with 7.8cMs. My daughter in law matched my daughter's match on #6 with 1.4cMs-so small it is not to be considered-not the same segment as my daughter's.

Goldfoot Heritage from Found Countries with GedMatch Test

Through a test on GedMatch.com, a Population DNA Eurogenes J Test, my brother and I have results showing what population our genes tell where our ancestors came from.  We already know my brother's Y dna haplogroup is Q1b1a or Q-L245(from Rebekah Canada)  and the origins of that were  parts of Turkey, Iran, Iraq and possibly southern Saudi Arabia.    Through my mother's line, I know my mt haplogroup is H2a1 and that population covers almost half of Europe though my maternal grandmother was from Sweden..  .

1. South Baltic:  8.62% to 8.90%  These are  Baltic states  as they are near the Baltic Sea.
Baltic states [Credit: Encyclopædia Britannica, Inc.]
Northeastern region of Europe containing the countries of EstoniaLatvia, and Lithuania, on the eastern shores of the Baltic Sea. It also includes Finland, N. Scandinavia, Romania, Belarus,   Since another Goldfoot cousin carried much less in her makeup, I would say most of this comes from our mother's side.  However, it could also come from Lithuania as it is most south and the Goldfoot/Goldfus lived in Lithuania at least back to the 1700s.  .

2. East European:  7.95% to 8,83%
Regions used for statistical processing purposes by the United Nations Statistics Division which classifies Azerbaijan, Armenia, Cyprus, Georgia, Kazakhstan, and Turkey in Asia:
  Northern Europe  Scandinavia
Western Europe  France, Germany, Austria, Czech, Poland, many Jews here
Eastern Europe  Russia, Ukraine, Belarus, Lithuania, Latvia, many Jews here
Southern Europe  Spain, Italy, Bosnia, Serbia

3.North-Central
European: 17.36% to 20,38%  Central Europe lies between Eastern and Western EuropeNorthern Europe is the northern part or region of Europe. Geographically, northern Europe consists of (from west to east): Iceland, the British IslesScandinaviaNorthern GermanyFinland, the Baltic States and Northwest Russia. Greenland, a constituent country of Kingdom of Denmark, geographically a part of North America, is politically a part of the Northern Europe because of its strong historic ties to the European mainland, and may be included depending on the context. Our mother's mother was from Sweden.  That would be north central Europe.  That's why we have a high % here.
Central Europe brown on left with peninsula is United Kingdom and across from it is Netherlands, and green Germany, red Poland, then Belarus, North Sea is white
4. Atlantic 13.90% to 16.67%  USA along Atlantic seaboard -recent genes.  It comprises the British Isles (Great Britain and Ireland), Iceland,Belgium, the Netherlands, the central and northern regions of Portugal, northwestern and northern Spain (including theSouthern Basque Country), the southwestern and western portion of France (including Northern Basque Country), western Scandinavia, and northern Germany.

5. West Mediterranean 10.42% to 11.55%  , France, Italy, Spain, Algeria, Tunisia , and for our history, most likely it was Italy as Jews from Jerusalem went there.

6. Ashkenazi 14.41% to 18.04% Jews live and lived in Israel (2.8 million), Germany (200,000), Russia (194,000-500,000_ and Poland (25,000).  Our history is from these areas in the Pale of Settlement.  .

7. East Mediterranean 9.24% to 9.78% with Israel, Turkey, Egypt, Jordan, Libya, Syria, Liberia, Greece and Cyprus, and our origins would have been Israel.

8. West Asian  2.89% to 4.32% The term is sometimes used for the purposes of grouping countries in  statistics.
West Asia
The total population of Western Asia is estimated at about 300 million as of 2015.  It overlaps with Middle East excluding Egypt.  As a geographic concept, "Western Asia" includes the Levant, Mesopotamia, the Arabian peninsulaAnatoliaIran,Armenian Highlands and South Caucasus. The Sinai Peninsula belongs to Western Asia.  Some records include "include the nations of Turkey, Iran, Armenia, Azerbaijan, Georgia, Lebanon, Syria, Qatar, Kuwait, Jordan, Iraq, UAE, Saudi Arabia, Cyprus, Oman, and Yemen as part of West Asia.  Our history would come from what they call the Levant which includes Israel.

9. Middle Eastern  5.18% to 5.71% with Israel being our origin, and could be from the Q also originating in Turkey.  At some time in history could also come from Persia, the home of Queen Esther (Iran today).

10. South Asian  0.67% to 1.88%,  and our history could come from Pakistan/Afghanistan, the 10 lost Tribes of Israel.  We must have hooked up with one of these people.

11. East African  0.18% to 0.43% and I would guess Ethiopia since Jews were there, descendants of the Queen of Sheba and her entourage who had visited with King Solomon.  .

12. East Asian  0.41% to 1.00% of Mongolia and China and this would be part of carrying the Ydna of Q1b1a with origins in Siberia, Mongolia and parts of Turkey.  Our connection? I say Mongolia.

13. Siberian  0.44% to 0.82%  (tested Y haplotype Q1b1a)  We were the perfect people to come to Lithuania as Q1b1a, right out of Siberia, Mongolia, parts of Turkey, and into the Pale of Settlement held by Russia.  Of course this trip took thousands of years and I think had to have deviated into Israel around Ur in Iraq.  The % is so small because this was where it all started on the Goldfoot side so very long ago.
